I was on the tube the other day going into central. Our month of fasting had started a couple of days ago and by the Grace of Allah i was getting used to the long days of fasting. usually in this month its the best time to remember God and glorify and praise Him. so thats what i was doin...appreciating being who i was...appreciating being where i was.
i sorta stopped and looked around...me a muslimah (asian) here dressed all in black sitting on the tube. next to me on the seat was an old chinese man having a chin wag with an old white man...about who knows what! on the seat in front, adjacent from me an afro-caribean man with a cool afro...a few seats away a white teenager in a long trenchcoat. thats only a few seats an already so much diversity!...next to him a white man in a suit in his early 30s...a few seats from him an asian lady talking to a african lady. standing near the doors was a black teenager listening to his iPod. the deeper i get into london the more diverse the commuters get!
this is london! diverse...together...london!
dont get me wrong...i totally dont agree with everything that the blair government carries out and its laws/policies that it imposes on the British people, but im always wary as to how to voice my opinion. afterall, i am a muslim girl, who practises and wears the full musim dress and am bound to get some 'go back to your own country if you dont like OUR laws'....but hold on just a min! there are sooooooooo many ordinary white middle class British citizens who feel the same...and when THEY voice their objections to blair and his policies...they are shown to be fighting a just cause...whereas if i...a muslim...was to do the same i would be judged as someone who is 'unappreciative of the hand that feeds me'.Ha!
i aint complaining...right now instead of dwelling on some of these injustices, im doing a course and hopefully an internship whereby i will be able to voice my opinions and change society at the policy level....the saying goes 'if you can beat them....join them?' ... so maybe working at that level with the help of other British citizens i will be able to help change some things that not only the muslim people have a problem with...but others too!
